CYPRUS CONTINUES to offer help to Greece, which has been victim to devastating fires for the past six days and has mourned the loss of 64 lives.
So far, Cyprus has sent 12 firefighting vehicles and 137 firefighters and volunteers, while Cypriot missions fought the flames in Aliveri and Mount Seta of Evia, Matesi in Elea, Lala area and Foloi forest near ancient Olympia in Peloponnesus.

AN out-of-season downpour in the Troodos area on Sunday provoked floods in Saittas, emphasising the damages caused by last June’s fire.
Despite the government’s efforts to deal with the land erosion provoked by the June 29 blaze in the Pelendri-Kato Amiandos-Saittas region, one of the biggest fires the island has suffered in recent years, the area was still nowhere near equipped to deal with the weekend’s sudden storm.

CYPRUS rolled up its sleeves, sending men and materials to fire-ravaged Greece, as the neighbouring country issued a desperate plea for help.
With the death toll rising to 63, and a total of 32 fires still raging yesterday, the Greek government has declared a state of national emergency. Due to the frequency of the outbreaks, authorities suspect foul play in a number of cases, and several people have been arrested on suspicion of arson, as the Counter-Terrorism Squad has launched its own investigation.
“This is obviously an asymetrical attack,” Greece’s Minister of Public Order Vyron Polydoras told newsmen.
The fact that so many fronts were erupting simultaneously could not be accidental, he added.
